Nokia Lumia 1020 Review

Finally! Some would vouch that it was a long time coming, especially when the Nokia 808 PureView has been making the rounds since last year, but we finally have that combination of a Windows Phone and PureView camera from Nokia’s camp. Looking back to last fall, we all believed with enough certainty that the Nokia Lumia 920 was going to be it, but alas, that wasn’t the case. Instead, we had to wait until now to finally see the device that hardcore shutterbugs have been itching to behold.

Everyone talks about how bigger is better, right? In the world of cameras, people are sometimes led to believe that higher megapixels would instantly mean that it would produce better results, but as we all know too well, it’s not necessarily the megapixel count that matters when it comes to delivering sharp shots. At first glance, the 41-megapixel PureView camera that the Nokia Lumia 1020 is packing along its rear will garner plenty of raised eyebrows – especially when that figure just sounds insanely high. However, there’s always this invisible fence that in turn makes us cautious, and to an extent, even skeptical about its effectiveness. Well folks, it’s here in the flesh, and it’s gunning to be the class leader in the camera phone category.

 If this looks familiar to you, then you shouldn’t be surprised in the very least, since the Lumia 1020 employs all the characteristic design elements of its predecessor(s). By now, the unibody polycarbonate design of the handset is pretty much expected, but instead of sporting a glossy chassis, it has this strange matte finish to it – making it less prone to smudges and fingerprints. Unfortunately, seeing that it’s packing one hell of a beefy camera in its rear, it’s profile is nowhere as bulimic thin as some of the other flagship devices out there.

 Honestly, the hump in its rear makes it a bit awkward holding and using the device at first, but after some adjustment, it doesn’t become too much of a nuisance – albeit, it still feels a bit alien. Sure, it’s top heavy due to all the hardware stuffed into its camera housing, but when we think about a 41-megapixel camera, we’re surprised how light it really is, especially over the 808 PureView. Overall, the handset still has an appealing design seeing that it very much looks like a smartphone first with an impressive camera attached to it – as opposed to being designed as camera first, with the smartphone part being secondary.

AMD Perkenalkan Prosesor Terbarunya dengan Kecepatan hingga 5GHz

Tak mau ketinggalan dengan Intel yang baru saja meluncurkan prosesor generasi ke-4 Haswell, AMD pun memperkenalkan produk prosesor miliknya. Tak tanggung-tanggung, prosesor terbaru dari AMD tersebut pun menawarkan kecepatan hingga 5GHz. Dengan kecepatannya tersebut, prosesor ini pun menjadi yang pertama dengan kecepatan 5GHz untuk pasar komersial.

Prosesor dengan nama AMD FX-9590 tersebut merupakan CPU yang dibangun dengan menggunakan arsitektur Piledriver delapan core. Dengan teknologi tersebut, prosesor AMD terbaru ini pun bisa mencapai kecepatan 5GHz dalam mode turbo.
Selain itu, pihak AMD juga menyediakan prosesor FX-9370 yang memiliki spesifikasi sedikit lebih rendah. FX-9370 ini juga merupakan prosesor yang mempunyai delapan core. Bedanya, prosesor ini menawarkan kecepatan sedikit lebih rendah, yakni 4.7GHz.
Pihak AMD pun mengungkapkan bahwa kedua prosesor terbarunya itu siap dijual di pasaran pada tahun ini. Namun mengenai harganya, pihak AMD masih belum mengungkapkannya kepada publik.

Ubuntu for Android demoed on a Nexus 4, shows the need for the Ubuntu Edge

With all the news about the Ubuntu Edge and Canonical's plans for Ubuntu Touch to be the future of convergent computing, you may have forgotten that Canonical is still working on Ubuntu for Android. Ubuntu for Android is essentially the same idea as Ubuntu Touch, where you get a full Ubuntu desktop environment when you dock a mobile device, but with the difference that the handset runs Android, not Ubuntu Touch.

Canonical engineer Victor Palau is showing off Ubuntu for Android running through a Nexus 4, which is hooked up to an external monitor via a Slimport HDMI cable. As you can see in the video, it does give access to full Ubuntu, complete with workspaces, and the Ubuntu Software Centre. But, as you can also see, the Nexus 4 struggles with the system. Windows stutter when moving, and overall performance is slow. 

This could very well be partially due to the system not being optimized properly for the hardware in a Nexus 4, but part of it could simply be that the Nexus 4 isn't powerful enough. The Ubuntu Edge is planned to have the "fastest available" processor and "at least 4GB of RAM", while the Nexus 4 has a year old Snapdragon S4 Pro and just 2GB of RAM. Now we can see that "convergence hump" that Mark Shuttleworth talked about yesterday.

NVidia Perkenalkan Kartu Grafis Tercepat Dunia Quadro K6000

NVidia baru saja memperkenalkan produk kartu grafis terbarunya yang ditujukan untuk kalangan industri computing visual dan diklaim sebagai kartu grafis tercepat di dunia. Kartu grafis Quadro K6000 tersebut dibangun menggunakan arsitektur Kepler.

Pihak NVidia pun mengklaim bahwa kartu grafis ini memiliki kemampuan komputasi lima kali lebih baik dibanding kartu grafis Quadro 6000 sebelumnya. Tak hanya itu, kartu grafis ini juga diklaim memiliki kemampuan grafis dua kali lipat lebih bagus dibanding Quadro 6000.
Senior VP NVidia, Ed Ellet mengatakan bahwa kartu grafis ini akan memberikan perubahan yang signifikan bagi para animator game, desainer digital ataupun para programmer. Lebih lanjut, Ellet mengatakan bahwa kartu grafis ini mampu melakukan hal yang sebelumnya mustahil untuk dilakukan.
Beberapa fitur yang dimiliki oleh kartu grafis Quadro K6000 ini antara lain adalah:
- Memori grafis GDDR5 ultra-fast 12GB
- Streaming core multiprosesor 2880 (SMX)
- Dukungan terhadap display simultan dengan resolusi hingga 4k menggunakan DisplayPort 1.2

Android 4.3 Jelly Bean bawa segudang teknologi terbaru

Dalam acaranya yang dihelat hari ini (24/07), Google memperkenalkan operating system terbaru mereka yaitu Android 4.3. Apa nama dari OS baru tersebut?

Setelah memperkenalkan produk tablet terbarunya yaitu Nexus 7, Hugo Barra selaku Vice President dari divisi Android Product Management menjelaskan mengenai operating system terbaru dari Google.

OS baru itu menggunakan seri 4.3 atau Android 4.3. Apabila rumor sebelumnya mengatakan bahwa Android 4.3 adalah Key Lime Pie, Hugo mengatakan bahwa nama dari OS tersebut masih tetap menggunakan Jelly Bean.

Berbeda dengan OS sebelumya, Android 4.3 Jelly Bean ini dilengkapi dengan teknologi baru yaitu Bluetooth Smart Technology dan profile yang terfokus.

Selain itu, tim Android Google juga menambahkan banyak sekali aplikasi baru yang di antaranya adalah aplikasi untuk anak-anak. Tidak hanya itu saja, banyak sekali teknologi baru yang disematkan dalam OS tersebut seperti Bluetooth AVRCP, Dialpad AutoComplete sampai dengan support dengan OpenGL ES 3.0.

Hugo juga menjelaskan bertepatan dengan acara tersebut, Android 4.3 Jelly Bean sudah masuk dalam tahap OTA atau Over-The-Air atau sudah dapat diunduh.

Nokia: Samsung membuat kami memilih Windows Phone

Banyak yang bertanya, mengapa Nokia memilih Windows Phone sebagai OS pada smartphone terbaru mereka ketimbang Android. Padahal seperti yang diketahui, bahwa Windows Phone saat itu sama sekali tidak populer. Namun sepertinya Nokia memiliki jawaban tersendiri.

Dikutip dari Ubergizmo (19/7), CEO Nokia, Stephen Elop, mengungkapkan bahwa keputusannya untuk bekerjasama dengan Microsoft dalam membuat smartphone berbasis Windows Phone adalah Samsung.

Menurut Elop, Samsung yang telah sukses mengembangkan banyak sekali perangkat Android telah menginspirasinya untuk menjadi kompetitor.

"Kami telah menduga sebelumnya, bahwa Samsung akan sukses dengan Android. Namun kini kami bekerja dengan Windows Phone. Kami akan tetap optimis, meski menyadari keputusan ini cukup terlambat," ujar Elop.

Harapan Nokia dan Microsoft tetap tinggi. Beberapa fakta telah terungkap dengan adanya kemenangan penjualan Windows Phone OS atas BlackBerry OS. Kini Windows Phone besutan Microsoft tersebut telah bertengger di posisi ketiga pada urutan sistem operasi terlaris di dunia, tentu saja di bawah Android dan iOS
