Ubuntu 15.04 to Include GNOME 3.14, Updates to Default Apps

It may sound like a small update but it should have a big impact on the lives of developers and users alike: Ubuntu 15.04 will ship with GTK 3.14. 

Released with the rest of the GNOME stack back in September, the latest and greatest version of the desktop and underlying technologies missed out on inclusion in Ubuntu 14.10.

No doubt keen to avoid the confusing soup of GNOME stacks present in the Utopic Unicorn, which features bits of 3.8, 3.10 and 3.12, the Vivid Vervet will offer GTK 3.14 and ‘most, if not all’ of GNOME 3.14’s updated apps. 

Good News for All

This news won’t only benefit the Ubuntu GNOME team, who have been hamstrung in their effort to offer the best GNOME experience on Ubuntu out ofthe box, but also those of you who use Unity.

Many times have I written about fantastic GTK apps or updates — like the well-crafted Twitter client Corebird and the new super-social GNOME Photos app — only to need to punctuate my copy with lines similar to: “It’ll run on Unity, but looks rubbish.”

Confirming Ubuntu’s intentions for GTK this cycle over on the Ubuntu Developer Mailing List, Canonical Software Engineer Sebastien Bacher writes:

There’s a few outstanding issues stopping 3.14 from landing, but a fix isn’t too far off.

What to Expect

Great news for developers, but also great news for you.

Firstly, all of the improvements in the newer GNOME 3.14 release will be yours to play with (give or take a couple of clicks) and, secondly, many default Ubuntu applications will finally be upgraded to their latest versions. 

For example, Totem video player gained a fantastic new UI and feature set in its 3.12 release, but Ubuntu has shipped with the older ‘classic’ 3.10 release in 14.10.

Other possible candidates will jump from:

• Totem 3.10 -> 3.14
• Rhythmbox 3.0 -> 3.1
• Baobab 3.8 -> 3.14
• Evince 3.10 -> 3.12
• Gedit 3.10 -> 3.14
• GNOME Terminal 3.12 -> 3.14

The plan is for default apps to be patched to work as normal under Unity and its Global Menu applet.

Non-default and third-party applications that use the GTK Header Bar will finally be themed in Ubuntu’s default Ambiance theme. Any quirks or conflicts resulting in the use of Header Bars, GNOME menus and Ubuntu’s own global app menu applet will be left for the respective software developers to solve, not Ubuntu.

Still, on the upside this should mean that the delights of GNOME’s stunning first-party and community app set running on Unity, from Music to Maps, California to Corebird, should no longer look like guests arriving to a dapper dinner party in hastily constructed fancy dress.

Ubuntu 15.04 Finally Lets You Set Menus To ‘Always Show’

If you hate the way that Unity’s global menus fade out of view after you mouse away, Ubuntu 15.04 has a little extra to win you around.

The latest build of Unity for Ubuntu 15.04, currently sitting in the ‘proposed’ channel, offers an option to make app menus visible in Ubuntu. 

No fading, no timeout, no missing menus.

The drawback for now is that it can currently only be enabled through a dconf switch and not a regular user-facing option.

I’d hope (if not expect) that an option to set the feature is added to the Ubuntu System Settings > Appearance section as development continues.

Right now, if you’re on Ubuntu 15.04 and have the “Proposed” update channel enabled, you should find this switch waiting in com > canonical > unity > ‘always show menus’. 

Better Late Than Never?

Developers plan to backport the option to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS in the next SRU (assuming nothing unexpected crops up during testing).

Locally Integrated Menus (LIM) debuted in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS to much appreciation, being widely seen as the best compromise between those who liked the simplicity of the “hidden” approach and those who disliked the mouse and trackpad aerobics using it required.

While locally integrated menus brought us half way to silencing the criticisms levelled at this aspect of Unity, the default “fade in/fade out” behaviour left an itch unscratched.

The past few releases of Ubuntu has seen proactive addressing of concerns and issues experienced by its earlier UX decisions. After several years on the ‘to do’ list we finally got Locally Integrated Menus last year, as well as an unsupported option to minimise and restore apps to the Unity Launcher by clicking on their icon.

A year on from that we finally get an option to make application menus always show, no matter where our mouse is. Better late than never, right?

Hal ini akan menguntungkan keuangan kuarter Samsung melihat semakin tingginya harga kamera modul resolusi tinggi. Melalui langkah ini perusahaan merengkuh langsung dua tujuan yaitu dapat mencari keuntungan dan peningkatan penjualan. Hal ini ditambah lagi dengan tingkat adopsi kamera modul 16MP dan 20MP yang meningkat untuk smartphone kelas bawah hingga menengah.

Asus akan Rilis ZenFone 2 dengan Layar 5 Inch

Pada awal bulan ini Asus sudah secara resmi mengumumkan kedua smartphone terbaru, yaitu ZenFone generasi kedua ZenFone 2 5.5 inch dan juga ZenFone Zoom. Bagi anda yang merasa layar 5.5 inch yang ditawarkan masih terlalu besar untuk nyaman digengam, jangan khawatir. Menurut kabar terbaru Asus akan kembali mengumumkan ZenFone 2 dengan layar 5 inch.

Hal ini diketahui dari situs asal Taiwan, Sogi, mengungkap bahwa ZenFone 2 dengan layar lebih kecil ini akan dirilis tidak lama setelah versi 5.5 inch tersedia yaitu pada bulan Maret mendatang. Jika ZenFone 2 versi 5.5 inch akan dibandrol di kisaran harga $200, berapakah yang akan Asus bandrol untuk versi 5 inch?

HTC Siapkan Desire 626, Ponsel Kelas Menengah dengan Processor Octa-Core

HTC tampaknya tengah mempersiapkan kembali satu seri ponsel kelas menengah terbarunya dengan nama HTC Desire 626.

Kabar ini terkuak dari bocoran foto dan spesifikasi yang disebarkan oleh akun Twitter @upleaks. Akun Twitter yang biasa membocorkan berbagai hal mengenai rencana kehadiran ponsel terbaru itu menyebutkan bahwa Desire 626 akan dibekali dengan layar berukuran 5 inch beresolusi 1280 x 720 piksel.

Selain itu, HTC Desire 626 ini juga disebut-sebut akan tersedia dalam 2 versi. Yang pertama dibekali dengan processor octa-core Mediatek MT6572 berkecepatan 1,7 GHz dan RAM 2GB. Sedangkan versi kedua dibekali dengan processor Snapdragon 410 dengan RAM 1GB saja.

Kedua versi HTC Desire 626 tersebut kabarnya akan dibekali dengan kamera utama beresolusi 13 megapiksel, kamera depan beresolusi 5 megapiksel, memori internal 16GB, slot microSD, dan baterai 2000mAh.

Pada saat dirilis nanti, ponsel ini masih akan berjalan dengan sistem operasi Android 4.4 KitKat. Namun HTC akan segera memberikan update Lollipop kepada Desire 626 ini dalam waktu dekat.

Sayangnya, saat ini belum diketahui rencana ketersediaan dan harga jual dari ponsel ini.

Selain itu, Micromax juga menyematkan processor octa-core berkecepatan 1,7GHz, RAM 2GB, memori internal 16GB, dan slot microSD pada ponsel berlayar 4,7 inch ini. Layar Canvas Selfie sendiri memiliki resolusi standar, yakni HD 720p dengan dukungan lapisan Gorilla Glass 3 untuk perlindungan ekstra.

Sayangnya, Micromax belum mengumumkan harga jual ponsel ini.
